Development of a non-destructive beam monitor based on Timepix3 for particle therapy (BGI)

Beam instrumentation at a particle therapy facility is vital to ensure optimal dose delivery to the patient. An ideal beam monitor would operate continuously during the beam delivery, being completely transparent to the beam and sample beam parameters with sufficient frequency and resolution to provide real time feedback during treatment. CERN has developed a new generation of non-destructive beam profile monitors based upon the detection of rest-gas ionisation electrons. The Timepix3-based Beam Gas Ionisation (BGI) monitors provide continuous non-destructive measurement of the beam profile, position and relative intensity. The objective of this project is to investigate the benefit and feasibility of a BGI monitor for particle therapy, and to investigate cost reduction by optimising the design.
